Bobcat Alternative Spring Break 2010

The Office of Multicultural Student Affairs and the Student Volunteer Connection is very excited about your interest in our spring break trip! Bobcat Alternative Spring Break strives to move heart-felt volunteers toward becoming life-long active citizens in their own community while also affording them to embrace cultures outside of their own. We do that by focusing on social issues that affect our world, country or community. 

 
A group of Texas State students will travel during Spring Break to perform service projects in the Hurricane Ike and Katrina devastated communities of New Orleans and Galveston, Texas while also taking some time to appreciate the unique culture of each location. In addition, students will participate in a brief service project in Houston.

Lavender Graduation Celebration
December 15th @ 6:00 pm

You are invited to Texas State's Lavender Graduation Celebration on December 15th at 6:00 pm in the LBJ Student Center, Room 3-13.1.

Lavender Graduation is a cultural celebration that recognizes LGBTQ and Ally students by acknowledging their achievements and contributions at Texas State.  Please invite your family membes, friends, professors, mentors, and other allies who played a significant role in your college career.  They are all welcom to join us at this fun and personal graduation celebration.

Multicultural Graduation Celebration
December 17th @ 6:00 pm

This celebration highlights the academic accomplishments of our students by allowing them an opportunity to celebration amongst their family and friends.  
 
The Multicultural Graduation Celebration does not take the place of the office commencement ceremony, but adds a special touch to the office ceremony which takes place the Friday and Saturday following the event.  This celebration takes place at the end of the Fall and Spring semester; an RSVP is required.  
 
The Fall 2009 celebration will take place December 17, 2009 in the LBJ Student Center.  A RSVP is required for this event.  All RSVP should be made directly by call the MSA office at 512.245.2278.

Augustin, Wilson honored with Excellence in Mentoring Award

Byron Augustin and Jonnie Wilson have been honored with the 2009 Mariel M. Muir Excellence in Mentoring Award at Texas State University-San Marcos.
 
Augustin is a professor in the Department of Geography. Wilson is assistant director of Multicultural Student Affairs. Both recipients will be recognized at the fall convocation.
 
The Mariel M. Muir Excellence in Mentoring Award, named after the former dean of the College of Science, is given to those who demonstrate their commitment to assisting hopeful professionals. Their time, effort and advice builds the foundation for future leaders and their passion for their work does not go unnoticed.
 
Texas State President Denise M. Trauth and a board of advisors decide the recipients. The award is given annually to a faculty member and a staff member, along with a letter from the President Trauth, a plaque and a check for $2,500.

Congratulations Ms. Wilson.  We are proud of you.
The Joan Burley O'Neal Alumni Scholarship 
 
The Joan Burley O’Neal Alumni Scholarship is a memorial to the late Joan Burley O’Neal (1953-1984) by her sister and family. The African-American Chapter of the Texas State Alumni Association joined the family to recognize African-American students at Texas State University. This scholarship provides $500 per semester for two academic semesters.
 

Distributions from the endowment shall be used to award scholarships to students that are junior or senior classification and currently enrolled in Texas State. Applications for the scholarship should be made through the Financial Aid and Scholarship Office at Texas State University-San Marcos and the Director of the Texas State Alumni Association will review applicants. Additional criteria for the recipients follow.

  • Reciepients must have a 2.75 grade point average or higher
  • Reciepients must be enrolled as a full-time student (at least 12 hours)
  • Preference for recipient to be African-American.

MSA Programs & Initiatives

African American Leadership Conference
The 16th Annual African American Leadership Conference (AALC) will take place September 10-13, 2009.  The AALC kicks off on Sept. 10th at 4:30pm with a Dinner Theatre in the LBJ-Student Center Ballroom.  Registration begins Friday, September 11th at 12:00 pm in the LBJ-Student Center with workshops following immediately afterwards.   Conference ends Sunday, September 13th.  For more information about this 3 day conference, please visit the AALC website:  A New M.I.N.D.: Moving In a New Direction

USAC: Underrepresented Student Advisory Council

The Underrepresented Student Advisory Council (USAC) is a programming and leadership development council composed various recognized, non-Greek, Texas State student organizations. USAC welcomes and supports organizations whose membership includes persons from groups: which have been, and continue to be, underrepresented in higher education. The missions of member organizations being a part of USAC is to represent and promote diversity and equal opportunity initiatives in support of a pluralistic society.

Allies of Texas State 
The Allies of Texas State program and Program Team that aims to create and sustain "safe places," places where LGBTQ persons can speak with an Ally in confidence, for LGBTQ students, faculty, and staff. The program also seeks to include LGBTQ individuals in all aspects of campus life. The Allies of Texas State program fulfills these goals by providing information, trainings, and social gatherings; honoring diversity; and fostering a welcoming campus environment.
