Skill Building Workshops

Student Support Services goes through great links to make sure students are given every opportunity to succeed. One way is through providing workshops throughout the year that assist students in many aspects of college life. These fun and informative workshops cover subjects from study skills to how to effectively communicate with your professor to staying motivated. Workshops are held once or twice a week in the LBJ Student Center. There is something for everyone so come and learn with us! Want to start the semester off right? Attend this workshop and learn how to organize your life! This includes organizing your notebooks, using a planner effectively and planning your day.
 
Scholarship Searches
Show me the Money!  You will learn how to look for scholarships, how to apply for scholarships and what you can do to make your scholarship application stand out.
 
How to Write Papers and Essays
This workshop gives you a solid foundation for writing essays.  It covers techniques in brainstorming, organizing you ideas, using proper format, and plagiarism.
 
Self Esteem and Assertion (EI)
This Emotional Intelligence Workshop will help you gain the confidence you need to stand up and be counted! Use that self-confidence to assert yourself and get the things you deserve. 
 
Manage Your Time Effectively
Have you ever felt like you did not have enough time in the day to finish everything you need to every day? If so, come to this workshop to learn how to organize your life and better manage your time. You won’t regret it!
 
Study Smarter
This workshop features techniques that will assist you in studying.  You will learn what kind of "learner" you are and how you process information.  It will help you study more effectively and learn what you really need to know.
 
The Art of Test Taking
This workshop explores techniques to better test taking.  It covers pitfalls to avoid and also helps you understand that different types of test require different techniques.  You will also receive tips on taking essay, multiple choice and true/false questions.
 
Hip Hop Culture in Academics
Hip Hop culture has become a fixture of American Society and has made its way into academics. This workshop discusses the influence hip hop has on students as well as curriculum; and how it can be a benefit to understanding the world around you.
 
What Professors Want: Developing Positive Relationships with Faculty
This workshop will help you understand how to impress your professor.  It will help you feel more comfortable talking with professors and teach you what approaches are the most effective.
 
Hot Topics
This workshop discusses issues that students deal with that impact GPA and overall success. Some of the obstacles include over scheduling, death in the family, an over-active social life and many, many more.
 
Overcoming Test Anxiety and Stress Management
This workshop will help you conquer your anxiety to tests or difficult subjects. It will teach you how to relax so that you can concentrate and use the stress that you do have for your advantage.
 
Effective Reading
This workshop will teach you skills in reading for better comprehension.
 
Resume Building and Interviewing Skills
This series explores a variety different subjects relating to employment.  This includes resume building, interviewing skills, and how to conduct your job search.
 
Math Works
This workshop gives insight on understanding mathematics. It includes how to study math, understanding new and old concepts and tips and tricks.
 
Decision making/Commitment Ethic
That is my decision and I am sticking to it!! Learn how to make smart decisions and understand the importance of keeping commitments.
 
True Colors
This interactive workshop will help you understand your personality type as well as the personality types of others. This will help you in dealing with family, friends, employers and professors. You don’t want to miss it!
 
Laziness is a Mental Disorder
Feeling Sluggish? Need a little extra Motivation?? This is the workshop for you!! Learn how to combat laziness and stay motivated when academics have been placed on the back burner.
 
Follow the Leader
 This workshop is a completely interactive adventure that explores many traits and characteristics of good leaders.  Then it goes a step further and teaches students how to put it into practice those characteristics so they become strong leaders.
 
Grad School Workshop
Thinking what to do next? Maybe you should think about going to Graduate School. This workshop will give the tools you need to get started on your search. There will also be a panel of graduate students to answer any questions you may have.
 
Body Talk
 This completely interactive workshop explores non-verbal cues we give off every day and how to use them to your advantage.    It also tells you how to avoid common pitfalls with Body Language.  It will be fun and informative so come and learn with us!!
 
Social Awareness and Empathy
While you attend University to earn a degree, the goal is to educate the whole student. This includes social awareness and empathy. Come to this workshop and learn the importance of knowing what is going on around your state, country and world. It will also explore empathy and why it is good to feel for all mankind.
