Texas State University sponsors a four-year Upward Bound Program serving 60 scholars. These scholars are identified and recruited from Lehman, San Marcos and Seguin High Schools.
The goal of the program is to generate in participants the academic skill and motivation necessary for enrollment and completion of post-secondary education. A variety of academic, career related and cultural experiences are planned to increase academic and motivational levels of the participants to pursue post-secondary educational options.
The program plans an academic year and a summer residential component. During the academic year, scholars are provided tutorials, life skills, and college prep activities. Guidance services include career and college admissions counseling.
The summer component involves an intensive academic program consisting of core academic classes and elective courses. For eligible students, dual credit classes are provided during summer session. Recreational and social activities form an integral part of the summer component.
A "Bridge" component for Upward Bound high school graduates will constitute another part of the summer component. Bridge scholars are enrolled in one college course at Texas State University or Austin Community College during Summer Session One - with course fees and textbooks paid for.
